Over the winter I want to paint my motors, but this one has an issue with the shift lever rubbing against the cover. It's actually worn almost completely through in one place and I can't figure out why. The lever that I think is for remote controls was broken, so I removed it and replaced it with a rubber bushing. This bumped the bottom pan over a bit, but I still have a bad rub. Has anyone every run into this before? Can I fix the damage with fiberglass?

Simple. Shift lever is bent from laying the motor on that side. I've seen more than a few that way. Lay the motor on the other side. The steering bracket is much tougher than the shift lever.

And I believe the rubber gasket on the cowling is what got rubbed off so fixing it with fiberglass is not appropriate.

No it is the cowling that is damaged here!!----Rubber gasket is inside behind what you see.

Can lever be bent back? I hate to ruin the paint, but should I heat it up maybe? Thanks for the replies. I'd have never guessed the lever was bent. The rubber bushing I made is in picture #4. When removed the other arm I needed to stabilize it somehow. I don't recall seeing a p/n on it, but I'll double check. I'd like to get a replacement if anybody has one.

I'd imagine that the shaft that the handle is connected to is what got bent but I could be wrong. Handle looks like cast aluminum so it won't bend just break.

Pull the handle and look at the shaft.

That makes a lot of sense Matt. The handle doesn't appear to be cracked. This may actually be a good thing. I'll bet it would be easier to bend the shaft a little than the handle itself.

I did find a p/n on the busted lever: 204809.
The shaft that might be bent I think is p/n: 0379794
The shift lever is p/n: 0278260, OR 0279019
