How can I tell if I have either of these features, and how do I disable them to adjust the timing. I read a post here that mentioned if I do not disable them it could make my motor run rough, which is the problem I am having. (1988 Johnson 120 (J120TLCC)). There seems to be some confusion in the threads I have found, some say disconnect the black wire with white srtip, some say white wire with black stripe and others say yellow wire with red stripe...which is it, also some say to ground the wire after disconnecting it and others say leave it floating.

best way is to get the OEM manual for your motor.

Re: Fast Start, & Shift Assist feature

The 1988 120 and 140 engines have QuikStart powerpacks. The engines are easily identified by the fact that they have two wires running from one of the temperature switches on one of the cylinder heads, one of which is black and white (or white and black if you prefer). The wire has no other purpose than to control QuikStart.

The red and yellow wire initializes QuikStart when you turn the key to the Start position. Voltage flows from the ignition switch to the small post of the starter solenoid and simultaneously to the powerpack.

V4 motors do not have shift assist.

I have a service manual, it mentions the Q/S and explains what it does but it doesnt explain how to disable it.

ok, thank you for clearing that up, do I ground the wire to the block or leave it floating to disable the Q/S.
