fast idle lever

I have a original remote control for my 84 70 hp johnson....What is the fast idle lever used for???Its on top of the remote ,with a picture of a book on it?

To control motor RPM's while in neutral...that's about it

I'd have a pretty tough time starting mine without liberal application of fast idle lever.

How does it work excatly? Do you lift the lever up first ,and then start the the engine or?

Yes. Lift the fast idle lever, turn the key while pushing it in (to choke/prime it) until it starts. Then, if it's a cold start, I usually have to push the key in a couple more times until it starts to rev up. Then lower the fast idle lever.

don't shift with the fast idle lever up, even if you have to drop it and jam into gear at almost the same time.

I wonder why it has a picture of a book on it?

You cannot shift with the fast idle lever raised as the two are interlocked to prevent this move. If you can shift with the lever raised, something is broken and you are now running a dangerous boat.

Have not put it in gear while the lever is up. Nor will I try it to see if its broken by putting it in gear while the lever is up.....I will take my chances.....................................
