What does it mean when you see boats that have the hulk and color faded? Take a look at the second pic in this CL ad to see wait I mean. http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/boa/4422726312.html

The reds and blues are one of the worst colors. The fading is a result of oxidation. Some times you can buff it back (temporarily) or wet sand and buff. It will eventually return. Colored hulls are a pain. I had mine (blue) done in a two part epoxy. Not going to fade anymore.

Didn't you just buff out, & finish your new boat?

So it's not like gel coat coming off or anything then? Is it a concern when buying a boat or just am appearance issue?

The gel coat is the molded in color, it gets dull, & chalky after awhile, more so, & faster if neglected.

Here check this out, my son-in-law's boat I cleaned up for him just with Vaseline!

that's a world of difference, how did you do it with Vaseline and how long did it last? I'm looking at an '03 bayliner and it looks as bad as this one..

The Vaseline trick is to warm it in the sun, apply to the hull in the sun and let it sit. After some time you buff it with clean rags. I tried it on a hull once and it looked good. Never got to see how it held up. Used Meguiars system on my 29'er and Buff Magic and Pro Polish on my current boat. Mine only has some green and I think green holds up better than a red or blue, as on my neglected boat it wasn't horrible.

The fading tells me that the boats owner somewhere down the road left it sitting in the sun uncovered for extended periods of time. It can definitely be a sign of neglect. At the very least the owner didn't care enough about the boat to keep it waxed properly.

Just rub it in with your fingers, then you'll know how much to apply, let it dry (best in the heat), when it looks dull, just wipe it off with paper towels, or rags. Continue doing this till the color/shine is fully restored. Then you must seal it. I polished it with Starbrite, and it will hold up as long as any other restoration project. Remember, it is good for any metal on the boat, & the upholstery too! I put it on my jetski too, the same results, and the purple seat held up like new for 3yrs, till I sold it!

This is my 19ft. Bayliner 125hp Force ski-boat, I took that ugly lettering off with oven cleaner spray, as posted in this forum. It worked great, then the Vaseline restoring was done on it as well.
