Anyone have good success using the factory paint (08707-PB109 ) & primer (08707-PRIMA ) sold in the aerosol cans?

Is the finish as good as original (with proper prep), or marginal at best?

Looks like "Neptune Blue" is the one I would need for my nicked up "83 BF100L 10 HP.

Re: Factory Paint

Can't say for sure about the quality (durability?), having never couched-up a Honda. But for other brands (OMC, Tohatsu/Nissan, Merc), I would say that it's worth it just for the nice color match.

I do know that once the paint has come off, nothing will ever stick quite as well as the factory paint did, especially if it stays underwater. I have gone as far as sandblasting, followed by 2-part aluminum etching (by the "book"), and fully followed the instructions on the spray cans. If the touched-up section "lives" below water, it's just not quite as good as the factory paint was. If it's tilted up at the end of every run, all of the touch-ups I've done have held up pretty well.

So, would you suggest not stripping to bare metal where the paint is good?? I've got a lower unit that needs some attention...especially at the drain holes. The paint is really starting to flake off due to corrosion of the metal underneath. I was thinking of stripping the entire LU to metal thinking I would get better durability...maybe not?

Take it down to bare metal otherwise it will flake and peel where the new paint doesn't take hold on the original paint. The paint is a good match, but sometimes the density of the metallic isn't exact. Apply a clear coat over the paint after it dries, it will help protect the paint and looks better. I tried matching Yamaha paint...... it didn't work so I just used a black spray on truck bed liner, it was durable and looked pretty cool too.

If you do paint the lower unit, use zinc chromate primer on the bare metal first. Your paint will have a much better chance of adhering.
