I seem to remember someone posting how they built their own trailer guide ons- the tall pvc pipe type.

What type of clamps and u-bolts did you use? I have 3"W x 4" H trailer- shorelander. Where did you purchase the clamps and u-bolts?

I got all the other parts, just need to order the hardware. ;) thanks.

Joe

I've fabricated PVC tubing guide ons.

I found the correct galvanized Ubolts, nylock nuts and clamps at a local boat store (it has a bunch of miscellaneous trailer parts), or if not there, at Westmarine - you might try there or Iboats.

Re: fabricating trailer guide ons

Thanks D for the reply. My question is what type ubolts? the bent pipe I plan to use for the "base" of the the pvc guide on, will need a ubolt or plate with a bend in it I would think to clamp it securely to the frame.

I have looked at an alternate plan to use galvanized unistrut like the kind they use to hang electrical conduit for the base, but the local supply store only has it for sale in 10' lengths, and I could make a bunch of guide ons with that!

Joe

Finally got the guide ons finished. Wound up using the unistrut an electrician friend gave me and ubolts to attach it.

Thanks for all the ideas on this board! :D

Joe thanks for the pics. Nice job with the unistrut. That stuff has unlimited uses it seems. How did you fabricate the uprights ? Is that plastic tubing or metal ? Have you had a chance to try them out ? My application will be for freshwater as well and I expect they will last as long as I own the boat.

Re: fabricating trailer guide ons

I liked the way it turned out too. The outer upright is 1.25" pvc tubing, with an L-shaped 1" metal pipe underneath- that is an unknown type of pipe that was a throw away at work. Not aluminum but some light weight stuff. Most of it was stuff I had in the garage or picked out of the trash at work, so I think total it cost about $15. I will try them out this week sometime- had to work this weekend unfortunately, beautiful hot weather here too!

Joe
