F_R,
As you probably have guessed, I read most of your posts in hopes of gathering some choice tidbits. I noticed quite a while ago that you posted a prop shop that you used sometimes through the mail. I sent a few of mine today to a guy in Tennessee (Dan's prop shop), and although it's after-the-fact as of now, I was wondering if you'd mind reposting the name of the one you use. I looked through your last 500 posts and couldn't find it. (I should have saved that one!!)

Also, my '99 30hp johnson was acting up the other day at WOT, missing really badly. I pulled the plugs and the electrodes were very worn, increasing the plug gap a lot. COuld this cause the WOT problem? I also adjusted the timing stop a tad. Either way, it's running great now with a regapped set of plugs and the timing stop adjustment. Do you think that it was a problem with the plug gap that was probably the culprit?
Just curious,

I don't why you'd want to play with the timing as that shouldn't have caused your miss. The spark plugs were your biggest culprit

JB, there are lots of good prop shops. I'll bet you can find a good one in LA if you ask around. When I lived in NJ, there were several I used regularly. Usually most Michigan Wheel dealers are also prop shops and most are OK.

Re: F_R, what prop shop, spark plug Q...

Thanks for the info, guys.
I don't have a prop shop local other than powertech. They are kind of high on rehubs the last time I checked, had a long turn-around. I did buy one of their new stainless props and it was reasonably priced and good workmanship. It seems to have a VERY good hub in it as far as lasting well(I run in a lot of moss and leaves which makes it spin a lot)
I played with the timing because back in '99 when I purchased the motor new, I kept having problems with the motor hitting the rev limiter and one of the things they said they tried was adjusting the timing. (I doubt they really did). They never fixed the probem. I did by getting a stainless powertech prop which had a little cupping to it. The result was slightly fewer Rpms. I don't know why the dealer didn't just put a slightly steeper pitch prop on it.

My suggestion is to find the nearest outboard dealer and find out where they send their props. While there may not be a shop in the Shreveport/Bossier area, there's probably at least one good shop in the DFW area. My guess is that your local outboard dealers send their work to them, via "Big Brown."

I was totally shocked they didn't just put a different prop on it, but they wouldn't.
I guess it had something to do with the price I bought the motor at. This was back in the day that a brand spanking new johnson rope start 25hp motor was $1699. I should have bought 2 of 'em!!!! The bad thing is, I KNEW that was a steal and should have bought a spare (If I could've afforded it). I wanted the 5 extra horsepower so I took the 30hp rope start for $300 more than the 25hp electric start. That was a HUGE mistake, because I never felt those 5 extra horses and missed the electric start. I actually bought a 15'/42" duracraft aluminum boat, a nice painted trailer, and new 30hp rope start johnson for about $4000 new, back in 1999. It's the only new rig I've ever bought. It still runs good after many hours, so I can't complain.

As to the prop shop, I guess I'll be able to give a report on how good "Dan's prop shop" is in Tennessee. I don't really like going to any local dealers in Shreveport if I don't have to because I hate going to the city.
