F225 hours seem strange?

Looking at a 28' Grady with twin F225's, both boat and engines are 2005.

Got the print out from the computers and both engines show about 400hrs, but it also showed that 200 hours on each were done under 1,000RPM.

Does that seem strange to anybody? Is it possible I am reading the print out wrong?

Just seems like in order to do that this thing would have had to sit idling for 200 hours.

Thanks.

This could be possible if the boat was used for trolling during fishing. The boat may also have been extensively driven in no wake areas at idle speed.

That is a good thing, you get to say 400 hrs when talking price but you know the motors wernt trashed. My boat has 300 hrs, 200 are under 1500rpm

Have a trained tech do a leakdown test on each of the cylinders and inspect the engine oil for fuel dilution. The engine temperature is very critical for extended idling so a check of the thermostats and pressure relief valve is warranted. The engine may need a decarbonizing using the new Yamaha tool and procedure that a dealer provides.

Yeah I was thinking about the trolling or no wake zone thing, there are a lot of 5mph no wake zones in our bay, but nobody goes under 1K RPM, you'd barely be moving, and if you were trolling at 1K or less you wouldn't be doing much good for trolling either, at least by us. I've never seen anybody troll that slow in the ocean. If the hours were under 1500 RPM it would be one thing but under 1K just seems like it was sitting idling to me. I have no experience with 4 strokes though, so I guess they could use slower speeds for trolling and no wake zones. I've had 2 strokes my whole life, and never trolled that slow, or went that slow in no wake zones.

seahorse5....they did a compression test on it, but I thought a 4 stroke required a leak down more than a compression test, so I guess I can have that done as well. What will the leak down show that a compression test won't? Valve seat seals, rings sealing?

Also what is the new Yamaha tool and procedure for decarbonizing? I want to know that for the future for maintenance reasons.

Thanks.

Re: F225 hours seem strange?

Thanks will do. Why is it normal to have so many idle hours, is that something specific to 4 strokes?

What will a leak down show in contrast to just a compression test? What should be looked for with the T-stats and pressure relief valve, just normal operation or should they just be replaced based on the hours? Is the pressure relief valve the same thing as the poppit valve?

Thanks.

Its a dealer only procedure - ask your dealer to show you tech bulletin 2010-001

Re: F225 hours seem strange?

If he was a fisherman, maybe he did a lot of idling in and around artificial reefs, jettys and similar, that and the normal idling and no wake zones, and trying to save on fuel like myself, maybe not so unusual. We spent 6 days last week on the boat on the St. Johns River, Fl., and I doubt I ever got over 3500RPM's, at marina prices of $4.99/gallon it can make a guy pretty light on the throttles.

My 4 stroke yamaha trolls too fast at idle for most crankbaits used for stripers.I don't have a tach. but I believe its about 1k or less.Shifting is smooth and quiet.I have a 17" pitch 4 blade prop.Yamahas website has data on speed at RPM and fuel mileage for lots of boats and some GWs.one for a single F225 says 5mph,at 1000 rpm w a 15" pitch prop.
