I have a 2006 F115 Yamaha outboard on the pontoon boat I bought two years ago. I need help diagnosing a trim problem. Here are the facts:
  • The engine appears to be trimmed fully down.
  • The trim gauge indicate well above the UP position.
  • When I press the down trim button (throttle or on engine) I hear a motor run but there is no movement.
  • When I press either up trim button, I hear a click but there is no movement.
Here are my questions:
  1. How do I diagnose the lack of trim movement?
  2. Is there likely a correlation between the trim position indicated on the gauge and the lack of trim movement?
  3. If the problem turns out to be a relay, where is it located?
Thanks in advance.

One more question:
4. Does a single relay device control both up and down movement?

I have a 2006 F115 Yamaha outboard on the pontoon boat I bought two years ago. I need help diagnosing a trim problem. Here are the facts:
  • The engine appears to be trimmed fully down.
  • The trim gauge indicate well above the UP position. Trim cam misadjusted, wiring issue or sender is faulty.
  • When I press the down trim button (throttle or on engine) I hear a motor run but there is no movement. Makes sense if the motor is fully down.
  • When I press either up trim button, I hear a click but there is no movement.
Here are my questions:
  1. How do I diagnose the lack of trim movement? Reverse the blue and green wires at the trim and tilt relay assembly. The power wires to the trim/tilt pump.
  2. Is there likely a correlation between the trim position indicated on the gauge and the lack of trim movement? No.
  3. If the problem turns out to be a relay, where is it located? Front of the motor. See diagram.
Thanks in advance.
If you can't find the relay, follow the wires from the trim and tilt assembly outside of the cowling to the relay within the cowling.

That was the info I needed. I switched the blue and green wires and confirmed the up side of the relay is bad. A new relay assembly is on order. ... I'll address the trim gauge over the winter.
