F100 Won't Go Past 2000rpm

Twin 2000 F100 4-strokes. Port motor won't go past 2000rpm when in gear. Idles fine and I can run it up past 2000rpm in neutral. If I try and run it past 2000rpm, it starts dropping rpm's until it eventually dies. Has new fuel, filters, and carbs recently rebuilt. Any and all info and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like for some reason more air than fuel is in the carbs, how much fuel pump inlet vacum is there ?

I'll try and check the vacuum tomorrow. What figure should I be looking for? Tried it several times on the water today and it never varied from 2000rpm. Never higher and never lower. It's almost like there's a limiter that kicks in at 2000rpm. I'll try and post tomorrow with some vacuum readings. Thanks for the quick reply.

Never did measure the fuel inlet vacuum as rodbolt suggested but I ran the motor while trailered yesterday. I put it in gear and I can get all the RPM's I want. Could being in the water make a difference or has the Yamaha repair fairy blessed me while I slept.

Thanks

if all your interested in is RPM throw the prop in the creek and all is well. you can then tag the revlimiter.

rodbolt, thanks for your quick reply. Over-revving is not my problem. Just trying to determine why I can't get over 2000 in the water but I can out of the water.

Thanks

I had the same problem-sat at 2000 RPM -no more and no less in the water-
check all your sensors-oil level sensors and tilt/trim sensor- if the tilt sensor is malfunctioning, i.e signaling a more than 30 degree tilt, the rev-limiter will kick in and hold it at 2000 RPM-at least that was one of my problems- by the way-RODBOLT does have a sense of humor

Thanks for the reply. Believe me, I can appreciate rodbolt's sense of humor :D . I also appreciate his knowledge and willingness to share that knowledge. I don't have a creek nearby but I did think about dumping the whole motor in the bay and coming back later and fishing it for grouper. I'll try and check the items you suggested. Thanks again.

Re: F100 Won't Go Past 2000rpm

when testing the motor you have to have a methodfical plan. it also requires a certain amount of knowledge, obtainable in the service manual, and basic test equipment.you first must verify the engines mechanical integrity. the the ign and its subsystems then fuel and its subsystems.
if its the rev limiter the motor will shake badly as the ECU misfires various cylinders.
so far I have not seen the trim tied to the ECU.
quit revving it without a load , you can throw two spark plugs away and rev to 4K on the flusher.
its meaningless.
not much in the way of sensors on that F100.
if it over temps or lacks oil pressure it sets the rev limiter, audible and visual indicates.
if its the engine ECU that set a fault and you have factory Yamaha rigging if one engine enters RPM reduction they both do.
thats why I stress using genuine yamaha stuff rigged by a trained yamaha tech.
if the TPS fails you will have fixed timing. the diagnostic test lamp is about 70 dollars from yamaha and will indicate if its an ECU monitored sensor.
most the time its lack of fuel in the combustion chamber for whatever reason.
if the TPS fails it will idle fast and timing will be fixed at 10*BTDC.

I know its frusterating but it is what it is and the steps to repair it MUST be followed.
you MUST verify spark at the correct time at the problem RPM and enough aif/fuel is entering the combustion chamber at the correct time.
suck,squeeze,bang and blow.
everything else just helps it go.

Thanks for the reply rodbolt. You are right about a methodical plan. I haven't had one. I've been tackling the problem haphazardly and never ruling out anything. If anything else comes to mind, please feel free to post it. Thanks again.
