Been using an ablative water based bottom paint for three seasons now. The 1st season I hired a hand at the boat yard to do the work and after seeing how easy this paint was to use, I've done it myself for the last two seasons. I keep my boat in fresh/brackish water all summer except for about two weeks when I head down to the Chesapeake Bay for a little cruising. A half a gallon did the job today, my LOA is about 26.1. The hose at the boat yard was all the clean up that I needed. One less thing on the list for next weekend :D

Sounds like you only did one coat. Is that enough?

Re: EZ Bottom Painting Again

Chris1956, your right one coat of black? but it seems to be holding up for the season. There was a grey primer coat that I could see coming through when I started using the paint a few seasons ago. I?m not sure what was originally used for the bottom paint but I do know it was ablative.

In the fall when I get a power wash a good amount of black paint comes off but not all of it, I can't see any more grey primer, just the current seasons black paint. If I go with two coats, do you think I can skip a season? In general it?s both a cosmetic and a maintenance thing; I don't get any type of growth that hasn?t come off with the end of season power wash.

I do think you can go two seasons with two coats of paint. Also, the second coat will get any missed spots that you might overlook.

I almost went with the water-base AF this year. However, I thought it easier to toss out the chip brush, foam roller and paint tray liner vs washing them out. In addition, I was afraid that cold weather or rain would ruin the water-base paint, if it didn't dry quick enough. I stuck with the oil base AF paint....
