EXTREMELY high revving

Anyone ever experienced this? Just put new points (set to .020), coils, condensers, and plugs in my '54 Johnson 25 (RD-16), along with rebuilding the carb with new gaskets, valve/seat, and float and took her to the test tank. Thought I was good to go. She fired up in three pulls and I set the low speed (backed out 1.5 turns) and the high speed (.75 turns). After 5 minutes at idle, everything seemed ok, then, I turned the throttle to 'fast' to see if the high-revs were ok at idle. Well, it was good/normal for about 30 seconds, then, it just decided to just keep on revving. It was like it said to me, 'ok, buddy . . . hammer down!' I backed down the throttle - nothing. Turned high/low idle nobs to 0 - nothing. Tried to choke it out - nothing. Pulled the gas line waiting for it to just run itself out (hopefully b/f it blew a rod). I swear, I thought it was just going to blow up. What would cause a motor to just rev outta control? Until I know what happened, I'm afraid to use it - can't help but think if that were in gear and happened while approaching the dock.

Re: EXTREMELY high revving

Its caused by have no load on engine. Not in gear with prop turning.

Two stroke engines can a do "run away" as you well know at this point in time.

as long as they have a fuel supply they will keep reving until something gives.

They wont do this in the water and in gear. so not to worry. Assumeing your throtle is not stuck open.

A two stroke can runaway even with plug wires pulled off. If carbon deposits in head or piston becomes glowing hot, They will act as a diesel engine. They have to be really hot to do this.

But usualy pulling plug wires is the quickest way to kill motor.

Good luck!

Thanks very much for the explanation - I feel better. Still amazed as the concept, but at least now I've got a future plan of attack. Sounds like cleaning the piston heads may be in order to help safeguard against future 'runaways'. Much obliged!

Along with never, ever reving a 2-stroke engine in neutral. But I guess you've got that lesson. :)
