I was replacing the gimbal bearing on my OMC cobra outdrive when I discovered an extra part. I had successfully removed and installed the new bearing, and when I went to take the old bearing off the removal tool, I noticed there was a spring like retainer clip that I can describe as what looks like, a hair tie for a ponytail I believe it was from behind the gimbal bearing and against the seal on the bow side. Does anyone know what this is, where it goes and do I need to pull the bearing and put it back in. It won’t let me upload the picture.

All lip type seals use very small springs on the back side of the seal. The spring is used to help apply pressure to seal against the shaft.
