where do you carry extra fuel in 5 gal cans? Inside the boat or on the swim platform? I would like to take 10-20 gallons of extra fuel in 5 gal cans. I think the swim platform would work best for me. What do you do? any safety issues?

A very real problem is pouring the fuel into the gas tank. Where is the fill? Can you get to it from inside without having to lean over the side?

How are the cans going to be attached? Don't use bungies, they will stretch under the loads and weight of the cans.

bungie cords deteriorate with gas, I wouldn't do it. A structured mounting system on the swim platform would be best, but keep in mind it bounces and rocks around a ot. Is it worth it, I would say no.

I boat at Lake powell many times a year and you can be 100+ miles from gas depending on where you go. I always take 20 gallons with me on the rear swimdeck. The key is to have all the same cans and use a good ratchet strap to secure them. I usually use an additional piece of rope kind of like a safety chain if the ratchet strap fails. I like the more upright type cans as they have a handle molded on the back of the can as well as the top it makes it easy to thred through the back handle and secure them to the back of the boat.

I bought 4 gas cans specificaly for the boat only. They have two handles one on top and on on the side. I use a ratchet strap through each handle Just like you explained as well. I agree that they are better stored outside the Hull.

Re: Extra fuel in Gas cans

My onboard tank is inside the hull. On my old starcrafts, my 2-3 6 gallon cans were inside the hull and under the transom compartment. I regularly transport up to 4 of those cans in a skiff to an island. There is nothing wrong with having fuel on board as long as you are smart about it.

For one thing, cans in the sun have to be vented, or at least released periodically. The "new and improved" cans you describe are not vented and will swell up. If you leave the caps loose to vent, they will splash gas out and/or splash water in.
And while this isn't as much of a concern with boats, cars have tanks inside the frame for protection from collision. yours would be vulnerable if someone rear ends you--I picture their bow eye about at your tank level.
In that case, or if there was a small electrical fire, you'd not want them tied so securely that you can't get them off the boat in a hurry.

So the only choice is to tow a fuel dinghy on 200' of line with a quick release, with vented cans and mooring bumpers all around, maybe some I-beam reinforcement, too. OK I'm just being sarcastic; the advice here is good but the point is there is no perfect method and you just have to be smart, and more important, vigilant. Like everything else in boating!

Truth is I am just to cheap to pay the extra dollar for the low octane gas at the marina.

Could you upgrade to a bigger gas tank?

Yes, I have a friend with a boat identical to mine and he installed a 19 gallon tank on the port side of his boat. I'm not sure where he found it. I believe he just salvaged it from another boat. I am not to the point where I would like to do that yet.

I do love that large transom compartment on my old Starcraft, I could fit all 4 in there if I threw those stupid fenders out, dont use the fenders anyway thanks to having an old Starcraft.
The tank in mine is 16 gallons, wish it was about 30.

Re: Extra fuel in Gas cans

My boats are probably not as large as most members, so deck space is at a premium. Got tired of stepping around extra 6 gallon tanks, so both the MFG and Bayliner got fuel tank upgrades. The Bayliner came with a 9 gallon portable, it now has a 17 gallon permanent. Great upgrade, nearly twice the fuel capacity, gas station fill up, and it all fits in the same space as the old portable.

Don't just think of replacing the old tank with a bigger one. Also think about adding more tanks. The skinny, slab style saddle tanks that fit under gunnels, or the triangle tanks that fit up in the bow can add fuel capacity in space that might currently be unused. Just something to think about.

Big tank upgrades can get expensive, but if you regularly have to carry extra fuel cans, it might be worth the expense from a convenience and safety point of view.

I'm in that step right now of my restoration to decide if I want to upgrade the current portable tank to something bigger or adding fuel storage tanks on board
