extending stock wiring: wire size needed?

My boat has prewired lights wiring. I have relocated the battery about 10 feet away from where it was. Can I use 12 or 14 gauge wire to go to the battery for the lights only, or do I need bigger due to distance? Electricity is my absolute weakest subject. Except wifespeak. Dont understand a word of it.

haha. no, you won't need to derate wire size for that distance.

to avoid running ten feet of 2 wires to the battery, could I connect them at the motor to where the battery cables attach?
