I am thinking about buying a 98 Astro 2050.It has a 98 Mercury 225 on it.Very nice boat. But its a repo. The dealer said i can try it out before buying. He also said he can sell me an extended warranty for 2 years at 1500 bucks. He didnt push that topic ,i did.I know very little about outboards. What should i do? BTW does 16,250 sound high for this boat,it looks very excellent and very clean.

Read that warranty coverage carefully before laying down for it. You will likely find that it will leave you dissapointed in the two most common areas of failure. Those being cooling and carbueration.Whats the deductable? Is the dealer carrying this warranty or is it factory backed?

Re: extended warranty ?

The mercury factory extended warranty program is very good but this motor will only qualify if it is still under the original basic warranty that the motor was sold with. Being a 1998 that is unlikely unless it was not registered until 2001. We sell the 2 year extended warranty on that motor for $1,500 CANADIAN whis is less than $1,000 US. You will most likely be getting an aftermarket warranty which in general do not provide very thorough coverage and may have a high deductible. This would only pay off if something catastrophic happened like a blown up powerhead. Read the coverages carefully.
