I know that there are several boat manufacturers that have built in positive floatation, but lets say you had the need to push a boats max weight capacity, what would be more desirable virtually unsinkable ( like the Carolina Skiff ) ad where the boat is cut away and it still floats or something like built in positive floatation for weight distribution on top of the water ??

for the record I wish this is what I was trying to do, but just a big fat guy that wants to go fishing in a little boat.

with a little more research I might have answered my own question, I am looking for a boat like this, that will not submerge with a bunch of weight

Carolina Skiff. All the floatation is in the bottom. Also it won't submarine.

Though I don't see the difference in the two cut-away pictures--the second has floation in the sides?

Re: explain virtually unsinkable ?

any boat will submerge if the weight in side the boat exceeds the maximum displacement of the hull.

there are many boats that claim to be unsinkable.......these boats are made of foam!

what a heavy guy needs is a boat with lots of freeboard.......this is the distance from the waterline to the top of the gunnel.....these hulls will also weather storms better that most due to the amount of hull the water has to splash over.

the carolinas.....or the boston whalers are great boats....
but what ever you buy......get one with a lot of free board....

also a tri hull is a very stable lake boat........the tri hulls give less "tippage" when a big guy is hanging over the side getting a fish.....or hanging over the side from drinking too much beer !

Re: explain virtually unsinkable ?

alot of smaller jet boats are more or less unsinkable. You can put it into reverse, submarine the front end and fill the entire thing up. (i've had my drink float away from me before!) It takes awhile for the bilge pumps (3 rule pumps + engine suction pump) to empty the boat out, but literally you couldn't put more water in the boat if you tried.

basically there is an inner and outer hull. engine and all the critical stuff sits between them, and they are relatively sealed between.

Re: explain virtually unsinkable ?

I own a 16' J16 Carolina Skiff. It has a good deal of freeboard, at least to me. I have had myself (255lbs at the time) and father in law (300+ lbs) in it and it did not appear to affect the water line at all. These things have a huge amount of flotation in the bottom hull. Look at the first pic, none of the parts of the boat are getting water in them. You can buy these boats bare hull like mine and customize them with front and rear decks, livewells, center consoles, etc that Caroline Skiff sells. I love mine.

Re: explain virtually unsinkable ?

Floatation only helps when your boat is full of water. All small boats come with it, but if you put enough weight in it it will sink, whaler or whatever it will sink.

Your only concern about floatation is that your boat is rated to carry the load you plan on carrying so if it does become swamped it doesn't sink.

Follow the good advice you got above and worry about getting a stable hull tha won't tip with enough freeboard.

Every boat under 20' is required to be "unsinkable". However, that doesn't mean un-capsizeable.
