NSF = Nissan Four-Stroke
15B2 = 15 hp, B2 model revision
3V6-1 = Minor model revision
033645XC = Serial number

The B2 motor has the auto-by-starter type of carburetor (not a manual choke).

First off, year is irrelevant for servicing these. But, if you have a nostalgic curiosity, there are 2 ways to tell the year of manufacture, assuming the motor was originally sold in the US: There may be a dated emissions label on the motor. Failing that, Tohatsu America may have records of when the serial number was built and or sold to the first owner. In any event, that model was built some time around 2004-2006.

The last 2 letters of the serial # also represent the year the motor was built. In this case X=0, C=3, therefore, it's a 2003.

My 2002 Nissan shows 15 3V6-1

The engine cover says. 18
Nissan

I would like to replace the Carb. I understand that the 18hp is a Carburetor plus crankshaft change. From the serial number can you tell if its a 15 or 18 hp engine

Serial number 12093

Re: Explain coding please

You really should start a new thread, as this one is so old...
However...
Cowl do get swapped.
What is the actual model, in the format NS... (such as NS18A)?
That way, we would know whether you have a North American 4-stroke, of an offshore 2-stroke.
Sounds like you have an old 2-stroke.

Outboard is original with the boat a 2002 4 stroke 0n the serial plate it states NSF 15B2 3V6-1 serial number 12093. But the decal kit is for a 18hp . Looks like the original cowl as the grey matches .

Re: Explain coding please

The 15B2 and the 18B2 share the same crank and block. You can run either carb. Clearly, the motor was originally a 15, and has had the cowl (or al least the cowl decals) replaced. If you run 3R3035002M CARBURETOR ASSY, 15A-B 4-STROKE, $227.61, you will get 15 hp output. If you run 3V9035002M CARBURETOR ASSY, MFS18B, $197.38, you will get 18 hp. The carbs are available from any dealer, including several forum members... even me.

Re: Explain coding please

Thanks for the info. It came from the dealer as a kicker on a sailboat this way.
My Auto by starter has broken ( cracked) so by the time I replace it and clean the carb I may as we'll buy a new carb.
