I have a 1985 Evinrude 150 XP E150STLCOS that needs a complete rebuild(GOT MOTOR FREE). I have it in pieces right now and it will need bored on at least 1 cylinders probably to .030. I do not currently have any money into the powerhead. I have found a rebuilt powerhead locally that I could purchase for $1,200. Compression is 100psi all cylinders. My question is should I continue on with my rebuild knowing that when I am done I will have, basically, a new powerhead and I will be around the $1,200 mark when I am finished or do I go with the powerhead that is already rebuilt. I don't know if it has been bored, what was replaced during the rebuild, etc. All I know, and the guy selling it, is that it has good compression and runs well. Thanks for the advice in advance.

I guess it depends on the amount of pleasure you get from doing it yourself, Schroed.

If that pleasure is negative, go for the rebuilt powerhead. If it is positive, do it yourself.

I would buy the rebuilt head, install it , then rebuild the broken one and sell it. But thats me, I like fixing stuff.

Found a leaf blower in a dumpster and got it running last night.

I don't have a garden.!

We're all here because we're not "all there".

i agree with the pleasure and ability factor. but doing it yourself, you will know exactly what has been done, and it was done right.

Thanks for the replies. I love the whole aspect of taking something that is broken and fixing it so, that is not an issue. I think everyone's right here with their responses. I like the idea of getting the rebuilt one and selling mine when I am done too. Then I get the enjoyment and experience of the rebuild process. Thanks again.

Re: Expert Opinion Needed, Rebuild or buy Rebuilt

i bought one off ebay 175 powerhead for 400 put it on my mid ran comps before bought ,95 across installed on my mid .then built the one that came off, with some xp heads found blown 150 and used built powerhead on it
now have two complete, the one off ebay is still on my boat .no problems
so im going to leave it on and try to find me a hydrstream to run my other on
.or bassboat/ or 21ft bayboat.whatever comes first and cheapest,
the building of the powerhead with the help of the guys on here and factory manual.and understanding and cheap marine machinist kept the cost down to 1500 with boysens jetting and good heads ,and total rebuild of mid bushings and keeper and stainless steering tube ,looking for looper now that i have the bug .good luck if the powerhead has good comps may be the way to go verify that
