Hey folks,

My name is Austin and I recently traded a pirogue for a 2 hp mariner and a jon boat. The motor runs okay but it really needs some tlc. It's not that it has been abused as much as the fact that it has not been used very much or maintained. It'll run about 70% choked from low to high but it runs rough at times and pretty good at others. But I do not trust its reliability on the back of my canoe when I run a river and need it to get me back up. I am sure there is an air leak within the fuel delivery system because ether around the manifold will make it run at open choked and full throttle until the ether is used up. This is done with the carb bolted on the motor, obviously and I am well aware of the drug addiction and terminal fate of ether fed to outboards!

I have taken the carb and fuel system apart top to bottom. Some parts I have already attained like fuel filters, new lines, etc. But other parts I will need to order. It is at this point that I look for help from those with far more knowledge than me on the subject of the little motor and where to find the information I need as its new owner.

Firstly, here is the serial plate:

Mariner 2M
6A1 066585
Made in Japan

The carb says TK 3IL, for what it's worth.

So, what year model?

And who can you guys recommend me to buy the parts listed below from- preferably a sponsor on this site as long as prices are competitive because the sponsor is one reason I can get on here and look for you guys' help.

I am looking to purchase parts:

recommended spark plug
Carb or Carb Kit
Impeller/water pump
Propeller/shear pins
Lower unit rebuilding parts.

Do they make a complete lower unit for this motor?

Where might I find the owner's manual?

Also, if we're going to get crazy here, does anyone have any knowledge of a method or part that would convert these little motors from a motor-mounted throttle to a throttle of some type near the end of the tiller handle- like a conventional outboard? It doesn't have to be a twist throttle, but other than pulling the kill switch that I put on the motor, I'd like to be able to throttle down more easily in my canoe... instead of throttling to completely off.

I very much appreciate some mercury/mariner expert help on this. Hopefully I will get her back to her former glory and play hell on the river cats.

Thanks again,
Austin

That s/n comes up as:

2B M 6A1-053681 - 6A1-070381 1983

From here:

Mariner 2 - 8 hp, produktions?rslista, modellguide

Parts List:

2 H.P. - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

I use the Crowley site for parts lists as I like their search engine but that does not imply that you have to purchase there. Take the part numbers you need and do your searching around for best pricing.

See my message to you in Notifications at the top of this page concerning service information.
