boat... Starcraft 16 ft open aluminum v hull
motor... Mariner 9.9
question what would an anticipated speed be at wot with 500 lbs gear be? the second question have... same setup... would it be worth buying a 25 or 30 hp for the boat? it's rated at 1225 lbs plus 40hp motor.

Re: expected speed?

Hi. A 9.9 on a 16' boat with 1 person and 500 lbs of gear isn't going to break any speed records!
Whether it's worth spending $'s on a bigger motor depends on how far you will be traveling and how much time you want to spend getting there. Obviously a bigger motor will move you faster. Worth it ?? That's your decision ;)

You'll just chug along with a 9.9 under those conditions, I think you'd be much happier with at least a 25 and the boat would perform much better too.

Re: expected speed?

The 9.9 is rated for about 20 mph on a light reasonably fast boat.
The plus is your 16ft (if a bare bones model)will plane easier with a load than a smaller boat.
Carefully propped and loaded you might get 15.
No doubt a 25 would be a vast improvement. I believe a 25 is rated for about 31 on a light reasonably fast boat.
Our old gale 25 on a 18 ft Crestliner utility would do 18 or 20 with 6 adults aboard.
3 men averaging about 180 3 women at about 125.On or old small 15ft it wouldn't plane.

Re: expected speed?

Have had several similar boats, some light wt, some a little heavier.
20 hp was the minimum to get them up on plane with a 500# load.

30 hp should clip along quite nicely.

Re: expected speed?

I GPS the speed.. 15.6 mph going out and 17.9 back. no wind. tide going out both during duration if trip. . only thing I can think if is a STRONG current. I anchored the front in 10 ft of water biweekly to light wind but I was turned 180 degrees and stayed there regardless if wind ppicked up or not. the prop is OEM.

Is this with 500 lbs of gear AND you? if so, thats is really good. I would expect numbers like that with one passenger and minimal gear.
