exhaust throb in tell tale stream

should I have steam and it seems an exhaust throb in the tell tale stream, 1962 40 hp evinrude? i seem to have good water spray.

probably the thermostat opening and closing<br /><br />Newer motor telltales are a 1/8 th stream from the lower motor cover.<br /><br />DHP

there is no thermostat, didn't have one when i got it. it seems i am missing a part to reinstall the thermostat, i did buy a new thermostat just could not put it in.

A good amount of exhaust is directed through the water outlet at idle, so yes it should steam quite a bit. That outlet also functions as the exhaust idle relief.<br /><br />Are you missing the part under the thermostat? There should be a sleeve, spring and a little plunger for the spring.

"Thermostat Housing" - It should be available from your J/E dealer for $6 or $7.
