Just out of curiosity, wondering what, if any, are the advantages/ disadvantages of through transom exhausts , as opposed to Y pipes and exiting via the leg? Other than exhaust fumes possibly smelling / staining the transom etc. Thoughts welcome.

Performance gains absolutely nothing from thru-hull. Other water uses may hate you, and certainly your passengers won't be up for a second ride.

We see a lot of people come here and ask about thru-hull, and we all say the same thing. More often than not, they come back later saying it was great, for the first 5 minutes. After that, just headache inducing....

There is also a legal aspect. Some places have banned thru-hull, just because of the noise.

I have just the standard thru-prop, and I still look for ways to get it even quieter. Nothing beats being out there and having the engine being a just 'footnote' to the ambience....

That's my opinion... :) (apart from the performance, that's an absolute fact)

Chris.........

My preference is less exhaust restriction vs the Y pipe. Folks in the know say it does not offer much performance improvement, but I think the big block engines may need it.

Definitely you want silencer tips or some other method to reduce the noise.

My previous boat (Formula 242) had what is called 'Silent Thunder' where the exhaust was thru hull, but went into and through the swim platform to silence the exhaust. It was no louder than the prop exhaust.

So, IMO a big block could benefit from thru hull, but probably not a small block, and you want something to silence the noise.

Many thanks for the responses. I wasn't considering doing this modification. I'm busy enough just sorting out the necessary jobs. Just curious. I suppose it's a bit like "boy racers" putting wide exhaust pipes and "go fast" stripes on their cars........

Thanks again.
