exhaust pipe has a dent VP 3.0 GS

hey ! i replaced my manifold and saw that for some reason the steel exhaust pipe has a dent to the inside ( below the rubber hose from the riser). since it reduces exhaust gas flow i would like to repair it but i,m wondering how. somekind of a spreader would be needed to push the dent out - a normal car jack is to big to put it in this pipe and create a force to push the dent out.

any ideas ?

thanks very much in advance !

Pics would be good so we do not get too far off track on the issue.

That dent would have to be pretty severe to affect performance. By severe I mean touching the other side or close. If the pipe is still round where the hose goes and tube sealing is not affected I would want to leave it alone.

Are you sure it is not an on-purpose type dent for clearance of other components back there?

hey ! unfortunetly i have no pics for now. the dent is not that severe it touches the other side or is close to it - but sever enough to get in about 1/4 of the diameter of the pipe. i think we can only speculate if it affects performance or not.

since this exhaust pipe is steel and solid like a rock for sure it has been made intentionally , but i do not see any sense in it and for sure its not a design feature of the manufacturer. tube sealing is not affected - its all watertight.

any idea with what tool to deal it ?

I have no portable tools in mind. If it was off the boat there are several hydraulically actuated tools that you slip a thinwalled pipe over and the tool expands pucks that match the contour desired.

If you are referring to the exhaust tube that goes from the exhaust elbow to the bottom of the transom shield, it's cast aluminum not steel, unless you have some home made setup there, and that really wouldn't surprise me anymore.

Go take some pictures.

@maclin : ok, thanks, i think i will look at a automotive market if i can find something or i indeed simply let it as it is.

@don : yes, i,m referring to exactly this pipe and no homemade setup here.

The tools I mentioned are for steel rolled pipe or tubing, so I would like to retract my statement. For any cast material the shape pretty much is what it is, and beyond my knowledge of how to reshape, sorry.

For what this opinion is worth, my bet would be there is no performance hit with the shape as is, but I am still unsure of what you want to accomplish.

sorry gents- much rumour for nothing. i telephoned today with volvo penta germany and this dent is intenionally fabricated - for clearance of pipes for models with servo steering.

so maclin was spot on with his suggestion , i,m just wondering don had no idea about it.

here is a picture of such an engine where you can see what i mean :

thanks for any help and sorry again !

cheers

Re: exhaust pipe has a dent VP 3.0 GS

If the dent is the one I show below with the yellow arrow, then it's not a dent it's cast in there and isn't a problem. Or at least it isn't on the thousands of other 3.0L engines out there with the same dent.
If you try to straighten it out, you will break the pipe, and be buying a new one and it will have the dent also.
PS: if you measured it, you would probably find more cubic inches of cross section in the dented area than you have in the exhaust port of the elbow.

Re: exhaust pipe has a dent VP 3.0 GS

hey don- exactly this dent i mean - it seems to be the same picture what i linked previously. i think even in this picture and more in reality it really looks like a damage of the pipe and not like a intentionally fabricated feature- what it finally is and every 3.0 with servo has it.

so of course i did not tried to remove this "dent" but just reassembled the exhaust system.

we all never learn out !
