I've been working on this Evinrude 9.9 I got for free. I dropped the leg on it and found this:

Why is there oil and exhaust chunks/gunk in with the water pump? It's a mess lol. Should I power wash it out on the lower and upper legs? What do I need to do to stop this from happening?

Thanks

It looks like unburnt fuel mixture, maybe someone was running a rich oil mixture. You will never stop it, that's what 2 strokes do, they never completely burn the gas/oil mixture. Clean it if you want, but next time you pull the lower unit it will be right back.

After you get it all back together, make sure the mtr temp is coming up to specs at idle and wot.
