exhaust manifold drain plugs

The exhaust manifold drain plugs consist of a larger part that should remain attached to the back of the manifold, and a smaller bolt-like plug that I typically remove every fall during winterizing process. Last winter, however, the small plugs would not budge, so I had to remove the larger part of the plug as well. I then noticed some gunk on the inner area of the larger plug part, which is what was probably preventing the smaller part from unscrewing freely in the first place. I was eventually able.to separate the two, but still decided to order a.set of new plugs anyways. When the new ones arrived, noticed that the smaller bolt-like plug screwed only half way down into the larger plug part. Is that ok, or should it be able to screw all the way down to its cap?

Also, now that I have to screw the large part of the plug back into its manifold, should I coat its thread with something? Should I lube the threads to make sure that it goes in as far as possible?

Thanks!!!

Re: exhaust manifold drain plugs

I always put antiseize on every bolt i install car or boat ,,, good insurance !

is that plug made of brass ?

the manufacturing tolerance on those plugs does that it might be tighter then your previous one (pipe thread)

Yes, it is brass. And I bought a small packet of antiseize from Napa. But that should be placed on the threads of the smaller bolt-like plug. But what about the larger part of the plug that will be screwed into the manifold? Similar joins on my engine contain either a cork-like material, or something that looks like white paint.

I also still need to know if the smaller bolt-like plug should screw all the way down to its cap into its larger counterpart. Because as of right now, it only goes in half way despite being a brand new part.

Thanks!!!
