I have a 175 of early 80's vintage, J175TLRCI to be exact, and it is missing the exhaust adaptor between the L.U. and the mid section...
I just done the powerhead for a customer and he decided to let me go through the lower unit as well. When I dropped the lower, you can see where the adhesive was for the gaskets, but no adaptor.
When I pulled it off, I thought the water pump housing looked very dirty/blackish in color, then I realized it's in the same chamber as exhaust flow when running without the adaptor.
Can they be run this way, or will it melt the plastic w.p. housing in time. This housing doesn't "appear" melted or distorted, but I know the housing and pump was changed about 4 months before the melt-down of the powerhead (Lack of oil)
This piece needs to be there, doesn't it???
My 200 of 1982 has one.

It should be there although theres lots running around that dont have them. They get left out for various reasons -- the installer gets frustrated because he cant get it to stay in place, it falls out and just gets over looked or someone thinks it will run better with more "room" in the exhaust.

There is a certian amount of water in the exhaust so its rare that the housing gets damaged unless it runs without water anyway.

Ive seen motors without them that are slightly louder. Sometimes its hard to tell.

Well, I know the gent that put the pump in for him before this dude siezed up, and he doesn't recall the V6's using any exhaust adaptor and he's had a JohnRude sign stuck to the building for 20 some years! Funny...he did offer to order an adaptor for me...I told him I'd like to have the one he left out when he changed the pump..wasn't much said.
He did say it would not hurt anything to run without it, but I didn't want to take a chance without a "Known" opinion...if it will work fine without it, I'm not going to order one.
I haven't priced the part, but I can only imagine, and I gave him a round-about figure for lower unit service...

Personaly I wouldn't spend the money to buy a new one. I dont see that it hurts anything being gone.
