Exhaust Flapper/Seal needed?

Hi Guys, I noticed that the Flapper that's supposed to be in the pipe after the riser is missing on a 2.3L I'm putting together. How important is it and should I try to find one? Thanks.

Volvo Penta (OMC) did away with them years ago. I like them just for a tad bit more safety against water ingestion. So long as you never stop abruptly, or go fast in reverse then stop, you probably would be OK.

the volvo drives dont need them, however the cobra drive on the 2.3 does need one. I suggest you buy one.

Thanks guys, I'm gonna look for one and install it. Too much time and money invested to ruin an engine.
