Exhaust flapper issue

Prior to this past season I replaced the old style exhaust flappers with the modern version on my 1989 5.7 engines. I used OEM parts. At that time they moved freely and closed firmly, as designed. I have now discovered that at least one set are not closing completely, leaving a gap for possible water entry. The gap is equal on both sides of the tube, both "wings" seem to be suffering the same problem. They open freely and there is a normal amount of closing force. The tube is smooth and I cannot find any obstruction.

Thoughts? Are they simply defective? Is this a known issue?

I attempted removal but feared breaking them. Advice on removal would be appreciated.

Ayuh,..... The force of the water will push them shut,...... just as it pushes 'em open,.....

You don't have a problem,.....
