my 3.0 GS smoked the exhaust flapper at some point in its life and i found it's remains in the bellows...i went to the dealer to get the new pieces, but they inform me they are discontinued. the local tech informed they are not using them anymore on the newer motors....thoughts?

TTT Don ? anyone else?

i've also searched and not found an answer, they do seem like a good idea as a saftey percaution...i cant find a replacement anywhere!!! some please help!!

so far i found this on the internet

"VOLVO SERVICE BULLETIN Group 25-2 No. 5
Volvo gas sterndrive engines: 3.0, 4.3, 5.0, 7.4, 8.2
Manufacturer discovered that exhaust flapper valve (parts
#3653854-1, 3852753-7 & 3855517-3) in exhaust pipe is not effective
in preventing water ingestion. The valve has a short life span & has been
known to disconnect from its pivot rod & clog exhaust. Manufacturer no
longer installs on affected engines. Mechanics are instructed to remove
flapper valve & not install new ones, attachment holes in exhaust should
be filled w/ silicone or RTV sealer. Volvo also recommends >14" (!!!!) rise
in exhaust. "

sounds like my situation, my riser is well above the water level, my transon would have to be under water for water to get up higher than the riser....still if im out in some seas i dont want to worry about this!!!

Re: Exhaust Flapper, Discontinued, now what?

I have the same situation on a V8. The mechanic is aware of the Volvo bulletin saying ditch the flapper, but he also says that can/will lead to water ingestion, and that things have 'moved on' from then (1999?). He's getting one sent (don't know where from) and fitting it. I don't know enough about this problem to agree or not with his approach. Does anyone have anything more current from a reputable source about how to fix this in the long term?

Well, you can always go out and make your own.
Volvo stopped using them and never restarted.

I had this very thing happen on my 1986 OMC 3.0L. The flapper came loose, blocked off the exhaust and caused the motor to overheat due to the exhaust not being able to exit the motor. After the the flapper was removed from the bellows, it has been running fine for 4 or 5 years. I would leave it out if I were you.
