Exhaust coming out of pee hole?????

I have an 80's model Suzuki DT115 2-stroke. Ever since I bought it used the water was not squirting out of the pee hole (with the motor in the water or with the ear muffs on.) I changed the impeller, but still same. The guy I bought it from gave me another used lower end to try so I put it on (with the new impeller)...still won't squirt water. I pulled the the ruber hose that goes from the block to the cowling, started the motor and realized exhaust smoke is coming out the opening at a pretty good volume. I've bought a few motors from this guy and know he will eventually get around to swapping it out, but it won't be anytime soon. The motor runs good and strong so I'd rather try to fix this one.

Any idea what's going on?

Two things i would check. Run a thin wire down the pee hole to make sure it isn't clogged. If that doesn't change things there's an exhaust gasket between the exhaust and water pump that maybe bad and blowing exhaust up through the pee hole. i am surprised your motor isn't over heating though. Also, make sure the impeller is turning in the correct direction. Good Luck.

Thanks. I will try that. I put the impeller on and made sure the fins were twisted correctly. I forgot to mention that the thermostat had been previously removed too. Thanks again.

The gasket under the impeller is fine. I had put a new one on when I replaced the impeller, but I checked it again just to make sure. I had already taken the water outlet hose off the block that goes to the outside of the lower cowling. I put a piece of weedeater string in the hole at the block. I was only able to push it in about an inch and a half. Seems like it stops at a bend/turn. I figure if the exhaust is exiting from the hole that it must be open.

did you put a new thermostat in? removing them can cause strange things to happen. it's not like a car.

All water cooled motors need their thermostat or some other restriction in place to get the water to circulate properly through the whole motor. If not you will end up with hot spots. This should not cause exhaust to enter the water cooling system though.
Sounds like you have a hole or a gasket leaking somewhere.I have heard of problems with corrosion below the water pump along with other places. good luck finding your problem ,but put good thermostats back in.

Good point about corrosion. has this motor been used in salt water?

There's a big thread either on here or on marineengine.com last year where someone was having a problem with a Zuke overheating and it ended up being corrosion under the water pump plate. The guy was able to rework the area with epoxy.

I just searched here and there and I'll be darned if I could find the thread.
