What is it? Just an open cavity near the water pump?<br /><br />I doub't it'll only be bad towards your state of mind, and not really cause any other grief.<br /><br />But if it interfears with the ability to pump water then it would matter.

I'm no expert, but that looks like normal wear and tear to me. As a matter of fact, that looks exactly like the lower unit on my 50HP.
