exhaust bypass elbow instalation

I have a 1992 volvo penta 290 sterndrive. The exhaust bypass elbows were in bad shape so I purchased new ones to replace the old ones. The old ones simply pulled out the rear of transom shield but I am having trouble getting new ones in.It looks like I have to remove flange on inside of transom were the risers connect to inside transom shield. This appears to be difficult short of engine removal. Are these parts required to keep boat from flooding or serve some other purpose or can I run without.PS bypass exits are well under resting waterline.
Please advise
Brian

Are the exhaust elbows you are talking about approximately 1" with the end closed up and about a 90 degree turn? Are they made out of rubber? Let me know and I will give you some information to help you.

Re: exhaust bypass elbow instalation

Thankyou for your reply. The elbows are as you discussed about 1 inch diameter 90 degree closed at one end.It appears I have to move engine ahead to get at bolts on inside trans shield clamping exhaust y valve to inside transom shield.I tried to do that today by using hydralic rams to push engine forward about 4 inches but it seems to be hung up . Maybe I have to remove drive? any advice appreciated! Getting frustrated.
Thankyou Brian

I have this same problem. One of the elbows was missing on my 86 aq225 and the exhaust has been blowing right onto my sterndrive. Any tricks to make installing the elbow easier would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave

This is a 9 year old post and the original poster has not been back in 9 years............

Please post your own question in the Volvo Penta area.
