I have read that some have used an exhaust tube instead of replacing bellows. May be a dumb question bit where do I find an exhaust tube? I stopped in an advanced auto parts but didnt see anything big enough in diameter that I could use. Thanks in advanced!

I removed my tube all together. Boat sounds awesome on plane, but gets quite when I am going slow.

Mercruiser 4.3
Yamaha Out drive

ok. so I dont have to put the exhaust tube on? I may have been told wrong, but a mechanic told me that if I didnt put one on it could over heat the lower unit. Does it push water thru to cool it? Sorry kinda new to the I/O

Not needed. Purely a sound control device. Nothing to do with cooling. Lots of thru-hull exhaust equipped boats don't have them. In fact, they are just missing on many boats. Like graphics or a stereo: Applied by the manufacturer, but not needed.

Cup holders are much more important.

Caution though, it does make quite a difference with noise.....at least on my boat it did, so I actually chucked the tube and went back to the bellows.

Re: Exhaust bellows/ exhaust tube?

We were testing boats on Lake X using both methods. At the time we were using the Bravo 3 outdrive. We found the Bravo 3 needed all the cooling thru the exhaust and more. We diverted some of the exhaust raw water over the top of the outdrive with success. Merc may have fixed the problem. If it is one of the first Bravo 3 counter rotating prop outdrive, beware.

I have an 86 Merc outdrive (Alpha Gen. 1 I think?) and the bellows is loose from the drive, but it isn't torn or anything. Can I just leave it like that? Would that basically equal the same thing as a tube?

I would say it's basically the same as a tube, if your bellows is disconnected from the drive. But, where is the clamp?....still on the bellows?

Nope! The only clamp is the one connecting the bellows to the stern. I just boughtr the boat, and the bellows did not have a clamp at the outdrive end.

It did make a big difference in the sound, but I really do not care. It is not as loud as a through hull, but not as quiet as going through the leg.
