Exhaust bellows = 2 clamps. Why Exhaust tube only 1?

I have read in previous forums that many v8's have issues with back pressure expanding the exaust bellows and therefor an exaust tube is often used instead.

My current rig has exhaust bellows and no tube. These bellows aren't horrendously damaged, but are getting old and I am relplacing as a preventative measure. So Question #1: Do I use exhaust bellows or tube?

I am sure the answer will probably be either and I will probably go the safest route and use the tube. My next confusion is how the tube seals out water. In mercruiser service man #6 the instructions describe securing the exhaust tube to the gimbal housing with a hose clamp, but there is no mention of securing it to the bellhousing in any way. Even in the illustration it looks like it is just a sleeve that fits over the exaust port in the bellhousing. I am confused how this would reliably seal out water. Why are exhaust bellows connected with two hose clamps on either end, and the exhaust tube with only one?

Since you have service manual #6, look at section 4A page 8 and 9.
Unless you have replaced your engine, there is no reason for the tube. The bellows will handle a 260 hp engine with no problems.
Regarding the exhaust bellow or tube sealing out water, NOT hardly. The exhaust AND WATER comes out of the tube. And when the engine is not running, sea water is in the tube, it's open to the water. The Ujoint bellows is the one that must seal out water.

ahh, of course., the exhaust tube itself doesn't really need to be watertight - what with the risers being above the waterline.

Thanks don.

It'll be quite a bit louder with just a tube. I wish mine were quieter but not enough to choke the power off with bellows. I can really feel the power difference when I trim up and found that the boat accelerates better if I trim up before the bow comes down due to the extra power from the release of back exhaust pressure.
