I have a 1986 mercursier with a 230 hp motor. The rubber exhaust bellow between the transon and outdrive is cracked.

How hard is this to replace and can it be done without removing the outdrive?

Thanks

Re: exhaust bellow

Which one is cracked?? The main bellows is a vital one if cracked and should be replaced immediately. The drive will surely have to come off.The other rubber is probably in the same condition or soon will be so its best to do them all.The only one you can get away w/o replacing immediately is the exhaust bellows.Charlie

Re: exhaust bellow

I was told by a Merc service person that the exhaust bellows was not at all important and not worth the effort to replace. He said the only ones that require maintainence is the u-joint bellows and shift cable bellows.

Re: exhaust bellow

May not be worth doing even if the part "is" cheap.
I replaced a split exhaust bellows on my 165 Mercruiser last fall and it didn't make any difference in noise levels, function etc. If I had to do it over again I would used the exhaust tube instead. They are a lot simpler to replace if you are a do-it-yourselfer like me. Replacing the exhaust bellows is TOUGH!!!!, but doable. One end goes on pretty easy but the other can be a bear. I have big hands and there is little room to work in there.
