exhaust bellow install

I am trying to install a new exhaust bellow. I have a bayliner 2452 5.0 mercruiser alpha1 I/O. I see many threads on this but can't seem to find one that tells me how to install this. I have gotten as far as install on the prop side but can't get it on the boat side with enough room to push it on and tighten the hose clamp. Any tricks to this or do I need a mech to handle it for me?

Re: exhaust bellow install

When i did mine i put it on the transom plate first, then pulled it to the bellhousing. I bought a cheap set of bbq tongs and bent them out so when you open them they lock on the inside grooves of the exhaust bellows. Also, around the outside of the bellows (about 3 rings back) i put a tiewrap around it, with a tiewrap looped on each side so you have finger pulls and can pull the bellows up to the bellhousing. Also i sprayed wd40 on the bellhousing and inside the bellows. did not use bellows adhesive on this. It took some manuvering but if you have someone pull on the tiewrap loops to keep pressure on, and you use the tool i described, pushing it out around the bellhousing it will come on.

kay, I give up. I tried everything I could to get this bellow on and ended up tearing it. Is there a "tube" that will fit my boat? I am looking around on the net and dont want to get the wrong one if there is. I have a bayliner 2452 5.0 mercruiser alpha1 gen II I/O.

It takes some work but the exhaust bellows needs to be installed in the transom fist as lastcall1983 stated. Dish soap works pretty well for lube and once installed, you lube the other end with more soap and push it on. You don't use sealer because if it leaks a bit there is no issue.

The correct part is the bellows, not a tube. If you follow the book, and put the transom side on first you'll find it a lot easier (as 3 posters have already told you). You do need the special tool, but there are plenty of instruction here for you to make your own. I did and it cost me $3.50, as opposed to the Merc genuine one that cost upwards of $70.

By the way...it is called a bellows (yes, even just one is called that...like a fireplace bellows). "Bellow" is the sound you make when you find out you have to replace it, or when the job just aint going right!

Is there a "tube" that will fit my boat?

You asked so I will provide though as Chris mentioned, and debated many times here, not the "official" part. $30 right here on IBOATS:
Exhaust Tube - Sierra - iboats

So to sum up:
YES, it will make it slightly louder; mostly only noticeable run running it on a hose
YES, I put one on my 4.3mpi/a1g2 when the stock bellows ripped and I wanted to replace it
YES, I liked the sound better with the tube on both my a1g2 and my current 454/b3 that had the tube as stock
YES, it is much simpler to install
NO, you will not see a performance gain of any magnitude

Will someone come along saying why you should not replace it with a tube......

Re: exhaust bellow install

i put one on my boat last summer and it was easy. Some Power Tune, slip it on, clamp it, done. IF i were to do it again, i WOULD go back to the stock exhaust bellows as i do find that the tube is definitely noisier, but for the amount of time that i use the boat, it works exactly as it should. Go for it.

Same tube... But why buy a tube when the bellows is half the price? Exhaust Bellows - Sierra - iboats

Also one more thing... When you start your threads please include relevant serial numbers, or at least state it's an Alpha One Gen II.... Almost pointed you at the wrong part....

Re: exhaust bellow install

I used the $3 home made tool and it was pretty easy. My 120 is loud enough I don't want a tube to make it louder.
