Exhast Manifold gaskets, can they be re-used?

Ok, don't jump on the reply yet... :D

I have my motor out of the boat, and soon (oh god I hope soon!) I want to fire it up outside of the boat.

After I fire it up, I may need to remove the exhaust manifolds and risers for the install... will the gaskets be ok, or do I need to get new ones?

Can I install them without, as I don't plan on running it more than a few minutes to ensure I don't have water or Oil leaks

I know, reading the posts to not re-use gaskets, but thought there may be a mulligan.....

Your engine working or croaking depends on properly sealing that critical joint.
Your call.

Ayuh,... If you're talking about the exhaust ports into the manifolds,...Not the Risers...
And,.. If you're using the Good carbon impregnated composite 1s,...
I think you'll be OK...

If you've got the green paper gaskets,... I'd throw 'em Away before I even Started...

For as little as the cost, why take the chance. I make it a rule, no gasket is ever reused. False economics.

for the outside start up just put them on with a little high temp silicone, then pull them off for installation, scrape off the silicone with a rasor blade and use the gaskets for final instalation, this is for manifold to head only, not riser

so Gary, you want this guy to waist a set of gaskers for 5 minutes running when 25 cents worth of silicone will work just fine as a temporary seal, not me, no way

ATV on the manifold to block joint???? yeah right... that thing will come apart looking like a spun drag car tire.
Why not do this instead. Assemble your risers to the manifolds with the correct gaskets by the book. (AKA NO sealant).
Then just bolt the manifolds to the block with no gasket. Run your engine for the 5 or 10 minutes on the cradle. I bet it won't leak much if not at all because there is no back pressure on the exhaust at that point. If it does leak a little, who cares, its not in the boat. Just make sure your not spraying hot air on your plug wires or fuel line and you'll be fine. Then just pop the manifolds/risers off as 1 assembly and install your motor. At worst you'll have to clean a little soot off. Beats cleaning tar.

I like that idea, keeps it simple too. I thought about going without on the exhaust manifold to head, figured it would be at most noisy.

I figure It is a wise move to get the beast running before I hoist it into the boat...

And what is the problem if there is a little bit of sealant on the gaskets?

If you mean the riser gaskets... it's a no no. If you have the slightest overheat the sealant will burn and bubble and you'll lose your seal.

I agree with Dan here, or nothing at all on the exhaust manifold to block assembly temporarily, but you must put your gaskets in the risers.

Is this a theory or a fact?
Each auto parts store has a high temp. sealant designed to work on exhaust manifolds.
And most of it will be squeezed out anyways, only pits will be filled with it.

Uhmmm... its a fact according to Merc.

You can always ask the autoparts store or the manufactorer of XYZ brand sealant to buy you a new motor when the one you put sealant on takes a crap.... But I doubt you'll get far.
Besides... there's much better stuff out there rather than ATV to put on gaskets that should have some kind of sealer on them.

my theory:
new parts-new gasket-no sealant
old parts - new gasket- a moderate amount of proper sealant

as for old gaskets - absolutely no, unless you are in the middle of the lake.

Re: Exhast Manifold gaskets, can they be re-used?

so what are we sealing here, exhaust fumes and noise, niether is of concern on a test fire outside the boat when it comes to manifold to head, high temp silicone is not the ATV that you use on your bathtub, the exhaust manifolds on my pickup are sealed with Permatex Ultra red, they have been on there for 10 years and 135000 KM with no leaks and no engine damage, as if silicone on an exhaust manifold dould damage anything anyway.
