I removed the seawater pump and upon replacing it I had a difficult time bolting the stay (the metal arm the supports the front of the pump) to the engine block. I noted what appeared to be more vibration of the pump and a few hours laters, the metal of arm of the stay broke. What would cause the excessive vibration?

Motor? If it is a crank mounted sea water pump I would bet the pump didn't get bolted flat to harmonic balancer, vibrated like crazy until it fatigued and broke anti-rotation arm.

There should be a rubber grommet on the end of the stabilizing bracket. Was it in place?

Yes, but not very snug, looked worn. Thanks
