I have a 2008 Merc 50hp 4 stroke efi model is 50ELPT. It has failed totally and according to the dealer this is due to an issue with excessive spray getting into the motor and not draining properly. This is apparently a worse issue when this model is installed on a pontoon and according to the dealer who is doing the work, the motor was not installed properly by the dealer I actually bought the boat and motor from.
Mercury is providing at no charge a new head, new power head, and a new oil pump. There was apparently a service bulletin on this spray issue which I was never informed of.
My question - does any of this make sense - it sounds rather far fetched to me. Also I am being told I have to pay for all the labor - so far 16 hours at $90/hr. I think Mercury should pick up the labor too. Any chance of that? The warranty has naturally expired.
In the past I have had to replace two ignition coils, one under warranty and one not.
I am totally dissatisfied with this motor, but before I take up the labor issue with Mercury I wonder if anyone thinks I have a leg to stand on.
