I've been trying to remove trim/tilt lines from the Volvo Penta SX-M drive and but I can't seem to find the correct flare wrench. Could someone point me to the right direction as to what exact tool to purchase. As you can see in the pic the 7/16 wrench fits but I can't turn it (no clearance at the bottom). So far I've tried the same size tool from Discount Auto Parts/Autozone/Sears and Harbor Freight.

thanks in advance!

Have you tried spraying any PB blaster on them? They are probably gaulded on

I haven't tried PB blaster exactly but the problem is that I even can't turn wrench because I don't have clearance at the bottom.

that looks like an inverted flare nut on SS tube. those are usually a 3/8" wrench. Although, if metric then try 10mm.

Yea, you have the 'correct' tool, but it looks like a 'not-so-well-engineered' design of the fitting location. You might have to try a regular open ended wrench and hope for the best.

3/8" - 10mm will definitely not fit on that nut.
I've already tried a regular wrench but it just keeps rounding the bolt.
Is there a certain position the drive should be in?

Re: Exact tool to remove Tilt/Trim lines.

You replacing the lines??Or just taking them off?
Replacing: brake the hose/line and use a socket.
They sell a thin wall wrench at Auto Zone.
Snap On or Mac tools might have a thin wall??
Take your wrench with you and compare it.
Or get a cheap set of wrenches and grind the excess metal off.
I have a cheap set and the ends are humongus!! They won't fit in the tight areas,I bought a metric set from Auto Zone and they work great.
Do it slowly and keep it from getting too hot.
Too hot and it will weaken the metal and will bend.

That line is leaking so I'm trying to replacing the O ring that's inside (to start). Replacing the line would be next but that's a whole different ball game. I was hoping there was a special tool out there but I'll take your advice and hope for the best. Thanks to all!

brake wrench is the tool.

the nut is SS and the housing is AL. Put them in saltwater and the SS threads cause the AL to oxidize. ALOX is ten times larger than AL and the threads become seized. If it is really bad, then the real problem is that the SS nut will strip out all the threads when you remove it. Sometimes the best way is to take off the part, take it to a bench, and use heat. Sometimes, it is best to cut the hose in order to save the housing. once the tube is cut then you can fit a six sided socket over the nut, apply some aluminum screen door lubricant, and start wiggling it free. In genral, it is best to use a sawzall and throw the parts into a trash bin. then hit ebay and find used replacements from canada or michigan.

I think I'd get my Dremel out and take some of the housing away...maybe take a little off the wrench too.

That sounds like what you need to do. I have a couple of wrenches that I've had to grind down to fit into tight areas. Have a can full of ice handy when grinding on the wrench, to cool it down.

I usually just make myself a new wrench from an old one with my TIG welder.

No welding was required, just too much meat on the end of the wrench head. One of them I had to grind the height, another thin out the wall. I was amazed the wrenches didn't snap with how I thinned them, but they didn't. What ever it takes to get the job done...

True. I actually haven't made any tools for this application but I have a drawer full of tools I have welded up for various other jobs.

he/'s from St Pete Florida. There is no freshwater in St Pete. Even if he headed inland the fresh water lakes down here have tannic acid and limestone. I doubt new tools will help unless it is a torch and heat shield. Most likely, the amount of time spent versus the money saved will work out to around $6 per hour. It's usually better on saltwater to see what is available from Michigan before spending too much effort.

What does that have to do with a wrench that can't turn, because the wrench is hitting the housing?...

if it was freshwater, the nut would pop free and spin with fingers. the only reason he got to this point is because the nut is seized.

He claims he doesn't have room to turn a wrench. Not sure if he has gotten to the point to tell if its frozen or not.
