hey hey ! hello fello boat nuts , just picked up this boat with a 77' 125h.p. v4 ,
push button shift . ive got power at the switch. motor turns over by hand and spins prop in rev.unit will not start with key .
previous owner said it was stored all winter
in gear . so i am thinking the shift seleniod is bad or frozen . anybody know where it is on this motor? or how it operates. is there a trick to operating this unit . any feedback would be grandly appreciated . thanks a bunch

Hi Liftkitt, A 1977 evinrude would be a mechanical shift and not a 125 hp. I would guess you have an older 125 hp. the one with the distributor cap under the flywheel. One possibility is that this motor is running in reverse, yes it's possible for this motor to run in reverse even though the starter cranks it in the correct rotation. there is an anti reverse spring under the distributor cap and rotor that just sits on the crankshaft and if the motor runs in reverse the spring will shut it down, if this spring is missing or worn, the motor can run in reverse and give you this problem. Most of these electric shift motors were designed that if you had a problem in the electric circuit for the shift, (loss of current) it would go into forward so you could get home. if the motor runs backwards, it will seem to be stuck in reverse.

Re: evirude 125 electric shift stuck in reverse !

hello well i figured it out with icemans help . motor is a 1976 125 , not as preveously thought . after doing some reading and asking the previous owner what the real deal was . (just bought it last week) . i found out that this unit shifts hydraulicly with the electric selenoids controling hydraulic valves for netral and reverse , all she needed was a good battery and the lower unit was empty !!!! hmmm!
and come to find out thank *** he had drained it a couple of weeks ago . unit runs like a champ ! thanks a bunch now im off to the water pump .
