I have a 1977 2 hp evinrude.I reset the points at .020 and installed new carb kit, checked the waterpump impeller that seems ok and installed new condensor and no oil leak showing no signs of a bad lower seal. It will run in fast speed only anywhere from 2 to 7 minnutes and then it dies.Wont run in slow speed at all. The slow speed needle adjustment dosnt seem to do anything, but the high side is ok. Any suggestions? Really stumped on this one.
Thanks

When you overhauled the carb, did you remove the expansion plug on top of the carb and clean the low speed circut of the carb?
Is the tank vent open and not restricted, sounds like the engine is running out of gas.
Have you checked if the engine looses spark when it stalls?

Re: evinrude wont stay running

I did all the cleaning of the carb including that of removing the plug on top of the carb and cleaned it. I am however beginning to think it may be in the spark advance plate. as it may be losing spark when I back it down from the fast position, wjat do you think? It is getting gas, the vent stays open on the cap. and plenty of flow through the line into the carb. So I am thinking about the advance plate as it may not be making contact on the slow speed side. At least it is about the only other thing I can think of at the moment. If the magneto wasnt working, I dont think it would start at all but I never heard of one only half working. Let me know if you have any other suggestions that may help.
