My original warning horn in the remote control of my Evinrude 90HP V4 (1986)melted.

I replaced it with the OMC replacement horn conversion kit. The new horn work correctly occasionally, chirping once as it should when I first turn the key switch. But, often it simply sounds continuously when the I turn the key switch on, even without the engine running. This occurs even when the sensor wire is disconnected, so I know the cause is not a defective sensor.

The key switch has been replaced, and the solenoid and rectifier have been tested and pass muster. I removed the horn and contected it directly to the battery to test it and eliminate all other boat systems from influence, and the horn still sounds continuously instead of chirping once.

Is my new horn defective, or is there another problem that damaged it and caused the original to melt? Thanks for anyone's input.

Phildiver

It's telling you to sell the 'rude and buy a merc! jk, I work for U.S. Fish and Wildlife, and I took the office boat out the other day. It sounded continuously when the key was till it was started. Is yours still sounding when the engine is started?

Yes, the horn sounds before and after the engine is running. This is an intermitant problem. Sometimes it works correctly, sometimes it doesn't.

My suzi had this problem once. It turned out to be a faulty ground wire. It was a headache
trying to find. Good Luck ;)

The horn is bad, or incorrect horn for that engine, or wires shorted. The horns are all not he same. You can take the horn out of control box and install under dash, if you have dash. If VRO disconnected this engine has only 2 overheat sensors on head. You can get horn, redlight, push button switch(for selftest) from radio shack about 20.00 works great.

Dear Ellis340:

Where was your faulty ground? I agree that it is probably a bad ground, and I plan to clean them all, but I'd like to make sure I pay close attention to the ground in the remote control and the bad ground in your situation. Thanks.

Phildiver
