I have a 1994 40hp Force motor on the back of my pontoon. I runs OK i guess but today it would not start and it made a womp womp sound when I turned the key. I am going to check all the terminals and plugs tomorrow. I have access to a 1979 Evinrude outboard motor. I ran it two summers ago with no issue except I didn't have reverse which I am 90 percent sure it was due to the cable not the motor. So my question is "a gun to your head" which motor is better. I have heard Force motors suck and they are cheap but I really am a novice here. Can anyone tell my why a FOrce motor is junk and why Evinrudes are better. I know Evinrude has been around forever but I don't want to take the time to switch out a motor that is 15 years older then the one I have on unless it is worth it.

Thanks
Mert

Re: Evinrude v Force motor.

Regarding which motor is better... hands down the Evinrude should be. Evinrude/OMC had a long history of designing and producing quality outboards for many years. Outboards were the core of their business and what they did well. For Force and its predcessors/ancestors (West Bend, Chrysler, US Marine, Mercury) these motors were never the core product. WestBend's core business was cookware and appliances, Chrysler built automobiles, US Marine built boats and Mercury was primarily interested in their Mercury and Mariner outboards lines. OMC focused primarily on Johnson and Evinrude outboards and did a good job of it.

However, just because Evinrude has a good reputation and Forces are sometimes questionable, doesn't mean your Force is no longer viable. If you can fix your Force with out too much effort and investment, I'd keep running it. If it has a major issue (powerhead, lower unit etc.), scrap it and get the Evinrude.

I'd go with the Evinrude as there're a lot of parts out there for them and they were a lot better mtr than the Force. Incase you don't know what Force means. F= Frigging. O=old. R=rebuilt. C=chry. E=engine. LOL.

Thanks, My starter was blown on my Force. I guess I will keep it on for now and just keep the Evinrude in the bullpin. Thanks for responses.
