Evinrude throttle woes.

Yesterday I replaced the throttle cables on my '85 140 Evinrude. The old cables were breaking apart and prior to that I noticed the engine would not go into reverse.

After i replaced cables, the gear lever that one of the throttle cables connect too is very hard to move. Meaning I cant push the throttle forward or reverse without someone pushing on the gear lever on the motor itself with a wrench.

I noticed a grease fitting located near the gear lever on the motor. Do you think i should try to grease it? Can this part be overhauled with out removing the engine?

The boat sat for aprox 10 years and was given to me. I am trying to fix it up. Being that this is my first boat everything is new to me. I appreciate all the help the members of this board have given me.

Thanks

Re: Evinrude throttle woes.

nivram - The first thing you need to do is get an OMC manual and parts list for that motor. I would be careful about going after the gearshift with a wrench. Yes by all means grease that fitting and all others called for. Your problem may not have anything to do with the grease fitting though. When you drop the lower unit to change the water pump (a must to do to a motor that has sat for 10 years) you can easily check the gearshift assembly at the powerhead. Your problem may be in the gearcase itself and you can check that at the same time by moving the shift rod.

I had this problem recently and it turned out to be crud build up on the shift rod near the gearcase. Easy to fix.

Take your time. The OMC V4s are great motors.

Hi nivram.

Ditto SoLittle and one other thing. Were you spinning the prop while trying to shift? This must be done so that the dogs on the clutch dog and gear will engage. You run the risk of busting something if ya' don't. And to reiterate what SoLittle said, get a manual. Iboats offer the generic type. But for a first timer, I would suggest an OEM manual. Good Luck!!
