Evinrude stiff controls, 1961

I just purchased a Larson Playmate (1960) with a Johnson RDS-23 40hp motor and Evinrude controls. The shifting was really stiff, so we took apart the box to clean it out, lots of bugs and dirt, and grease that had turned to mud. What is the best lubricant/grease to pack back in there? Also, does stiff shifting mean it is time for new cables? This is my first motor that I am responsible for, any help will be welcome! I have the manual for the motor, it doesn't seem to say anything about the remote shifting. Thanks!

Disconnect the cables from the motor and try it again. If still stiff, new cables are in order.. More than likely would be a good idea anyway if they are real old..

Get a tube of anticorrosion grease from one of the outboard dealers near you. I personally like the Quicksilver (Mercury) 2-4-C multipurpose marine grease. I'd probably put it on my breakfeast cereal if it tasted better. :) <br />Johnson/Evinrude has 'Triple Guard Grease' which I'm sure is equally good.

Thanks Rick and Paul! I will try the new grease and disconnecting the cables. The motor sounds great for being ignored for several years, so we are excited to get it moving.
