Can someone tell me what direction a 1992 Evinrude 70 hp starter should turn? I had to take apart my throttle assembly and when I put it back together, the starter spins but doesn't ride up.

Re: Evinrude starter

the motor runs clockwise, so the starter has to turn counter clockwise, put a couple of drops of oil on the bendix. also is starter is not getting enough power, the bendix will not spin up.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

My starter is turning clockwise. Can reversed wires on the ignition switch cause this? The starter was working fine the other day. I took apart my throttle controls and put them back together. Maybe I crossed a wire the wrong way.

Re: Evinrude starter

all the ignition wires do is activate the solenoid, that supplies the power to the stater. are you battery cable connected to the battery correctly. if they are backwards you have more problems, than just the starter, rectifier, etc will be blown for reversed current.

Are the battery cables on correctly? Obviously you had to disconnect the battery at some point when you worked on the switch.

Yeah, if the starter is running backwards, the only way for that to happen is the battery cables are reversed. That would be bad....
