Hi Folks, (Yes, newbie here)<br /><br />I found this site and it has already proven to be very valuable. I had no idea even a year range for the outboard I have. Thanks to this site I now know it is a 1957 Evinrude Sportwin 10. I also know the proper fuel mix too.<br />So, few things and if I just failed to locate these answers I apologize for posting duplicate questions.<br /><br />This boat and motor was given to me 3 years ago, it has sat that entire time, Prior to being given to me, it sat for at least 2 years. Last week I replaced all the fuel lines that were cracked and no good, and the spark plugs. I attached a water source to it, and she fired up on the 8th pull! (and almost fired on the second) Purred like a kitten. So, what should I check and/or replace on this motor before thinking about taking it out fishing? Is there any "must do's" for something that sat for so long?<br />Also, Down by the prop there is a little screw that I'm assuming is a fill hole? that says "Fill with Hyphoid oil only" (or something similar to that) Is that just normal 80/90 gear oil?<br /><br />Thanks everyone.

Hi lladnarc ,<br /> Sounds like you're off to a good start. First order of business now that you know the motor runs is to replace the waterpump impeller. New ones are fairly inexpensive and it's a pretty easy service job for someone with basic handiness with tools and ability to follow a general service manual (that may or may not be specific to your motor). <br /><br /> The lower unit should take lower unit oil, which is basically 80W90 gear oil with extra emulsifiers added to allow water to mix with the oil in the even that water enters the gearcase. Farm tractor gear oil won't do, so get the stuff labeled for outboard motor lower units.<br /><br /> Before heading out, give a peek to the coils, which should be visible if you remove the small access cover on top of the flywheel - under the recoil. If the coils show any evidence of cracking or chalkiness, replace them. It's possible to replace all electrical parts on that motor for under $60.00, so if the coils don't appear to be "new" already (shiny plastic appearance), it's a good idea to replace them. Beyond the waterpump service, you've already covered the other sitting with age issue - hoses, so you should be good to go!<br /><br />- Scott
