There worn and need replacement. Got one piston wuith 60 compression , when I'm told it should be 100+. Can this be done by me or do I have to take it to a machine shop?

Thanks guy's! ;)

MAchine shop, I don't believe they come out, so sorry.
Maybe replace the rings on the piston, hone it, or go to the next size larger, you have a lot of options. Do your compression check again, with a warm engine. Then pump 80 psi in the bad cylinder at tdc. Listen and see if you can hear it leaking anywhere, maybe the gaskets is slightly blown, you never know. Make sure you have someone hold the flywheel while you do this and have the spark plugs out of the other cylinders.

You may also want to try wiggling the fly wheel while checking the compression and see if that gives it a little more.

Thanks for the advice, I opened it up and noticed scores on the sleeve deep scores. Guess I need to Hone it and install over size pistons . Or can I just install over sized rings?

Thanks .....

The normal, less expensive solution to this problem is to rebore the cylinders so they're clean again, hone them and install new oversized pistons and rings. Most important is find the reason the original pistons were damaged and correct it before you end up frying your new ones. As the experts here say, low compression is a symptom not a cause.

A machine shop does the actual rebore and honing. You or a mechanic can disassemble and reassemble the engine, but usually a machine shop does not do that sort of work. You just need a few tools and the service manual. You really want to use a machine shop that's versed in outboards as there are some significant differences in the work boring 2-stroke outboards than automotive engines. The ports must be relieved, and the material beyond the liner must be undercut.

People who know your engine much better than I will no doubt be along shortly. They will have much better and far more specific advice than I can give.

In the mean time, if you want to get yourself familiar with the procedure, have a look at this old post:
http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=024177#000000
